Farewell to the Force

Four seasons of Ghetto Force, four seasons of Enigma, and a short Professional career.  I've had my share of game winning plays, momentum swings, and spirited actions.  I've also had my fair share of getting beat on universe, making embarrassing mistakes in big games, and just flat out losing my cool on the field or sideline.  I have been the cause of wins, losses, triumphs and disappointments.  And through all this, never once have I questioned the decision I made years ago to start playing Ultimate.

I knew I wanted to play Ultimate in college, but I never really knew how much that decision would influence who I am today.  I came into the team as a wee lad, with “cross country speed”, a wild backhand, and the defensive prowess and mobility of a baby deer.

haters gonna hate horse gif

During my first ever evaluation, my captain told me that I was a bubble player (and I was…I didn’t play much at all in the Spring).  But Ghetto Force was infectious, I couldn't stop.  I put in extra hours in the gym, focused on my running form and strength, and improved my throws.  Broken wrists, twisted ankles, nagging foot pains, countless turf burns, and a spot of Mono later, I find myself graduating.  I’m still not the best I can be, but the point is that I've came a long way.  So, in lieu of this, and in tribute to the one true T-Wizard and the fabled Ghetto Force bloggers of the past, I shall reflect upon some of my favorite memories in a neat and cool list (in somewhat chronological order):

Freshmen year, when I ran full speed into Sam Newell to catch a disc in KU field

Nights at 440 Kiefaber (“The Oasis”) and 240 Keifaber

Winning my first tournament with Ghetto; Boogie Nights, although I broke my wrist

“Shoot the Gap” and my first Regionals

Running a Tough Mudder with teammates- then playing in the Alumni Game the next day

Dominic almost wetting himself on the way to Glory Days

Discovering the magic of Gin with Jamie Horne

Getting fully torqued at Florida Warm-up

Being elected co-captain with Jordan my junior year

Winning the Alumni Game

Morning condition stories with Kevin Lavoy

“Deep House Party” and “Team Tim’s” with Steve Jira (among other events)

Summer house Mario Monday’s and other magic with my roommate Erik

Our dude-jam during 2014 Regionals Quarter-Finals

Dominating Edinboro with Mark and Peaches

Ghetto Farce getting obliterated by everyone at Sectionals

Winning Spikeball at Huck Finn for just being there

Placing 3rd at Sectonals- watching young guys play great all weekend

“Classic Ghetto Force” second half comebacks

Mentoring (and living with) the new captains, Jack and C

Season's Greetings, fella's

Mixing Scott and Tommy’s names up all the time

Driving through [the forsaken hell-hole of] Indiana with Jamie Horne too many times

Daytona with the boys

And so many more.

Special thanks to my old captains:
Mark Federenko: For being the most intense, most demanding, and most talented captain I’ve had the pleasure of learning under.  I have learned more about Ultimate and captaincy from Mark than any other single person I know.

Phil Broderick: For over performing at every aspect of captaincy, thus making all future captains seem ineffective

And my other [elder] mentors from the team:
Jamie Horne, Steve Jira, Peg, Zach Kaylor, Alex Frasz, Adam Tardio, Butters, Patrick Kaufmann, Ross Gueltzow, Eddie Mack, Brendan Corboy and Phil Hagerty.

And to all my Ghetto Force roommates through the years:
John Bayer, Ian Cannon, Matt Welter, Steve Jira, Erik Meyers, Connor McMonagle, Jack Hanson, Conner Haenszel, Josh Maloney, and Matt Michalak

And the rest of you crazy kids.
I’ll see you all at the Alumni game.

Best,

Alan Huels

Quick Update

There have been a slight changes to the tournament schedule.

First, we will no longer be hosting a Dayton Sectionals for the Indoor Ultimate Championship.  It was difficult to generate interest from local teams due to a high bid cost set by IUC.  We decided that we should focus our efforts more on preparing for our full squad, full field, real ultimate style tournaments.

The next change is that neither A or B team will be traveling to Nashville for the Music City tournament on the weekend 3/28-3/29.  Instead, the B team will be traveling to Pittsburg for a tournament that consists of exclusively B teams.  Pittsburg B will be the host for this tournament.  They will also be housing all of the visiting teams which should be a neat experience for our guys.

HOW NEAT IS THAT?

(comes from this video which has been a house favorite at 26 Chambers)
Our A team will be traveling to the highly competitive tournament in St. Louis, Missouri known as Huck Finn.  There are quite a few Nationals caliber teams planning to attend this tournament.  We will be competing against teams such as:

Minnesota Grey Duck
Texas TUFF
Texas A&M Dozen
Kansas State Huckstables
Luther LUFDA
Stanford Bloodthirsty
Iowa State ISUC
Missouri MUtants
Washington University in St. Louis Contra
Tulane Rex
Brown Brownian Motion
Cincinnati Cinister

It will be a chance for us to test ourselves against some of the best teams in the nation and see how we match up.  It should be a very rewarding tournament and who knows, maybe we make a splash similar to Florida Warm Up 2013.

That's all I've got for now.
Good things are happening.
luv u all ;}

It's 2015, people

Hello

It's 2015 now.  Since it's a new year I figured I'd get my annual blog post out of the way early this year.  Welp. Here it goes.

January 12th marked the beginning of the spring semester for us students. It also marked the return of all Members of the Ghetto Force to the the epicenter of Dayton's premier college ultimate team AKA the University of Dayton.  As such, classes resumed which basically made everyone question their purpose in life.  Or at least why they put themselves through such torture. Idk maybe some of you like class, in which case you're kind of a weirdo.  To remedy the pain of having multiple syllabi shoved down our collective throats we decided to start winter* practices.

The asterisk is present in the previous sentence because our first two winter practice sessions actually took place outside in beaming sunlight on Stuart field.  We were able to scrimmage and do some other stuff that we can't normally do indoors (like huck drills).  It was an amazing way to start off the year.  Most of us actually played pretty well.  Very encouraging performances from the rookies.

How most of winter feels vs. How Monday and Tuesday felt

One of the things that has changed for this season is that winter conditioning no longer takes place at 6:30am twice a week.  We've noticed over the past few years that those times have done a very good job of discouraging people from coming to practice and subsequently be out of shape once tournaments started. So the solution to this problem was to offer more practice days at more appealing times.  We have two sessions that happen around 6pm on Mondays and Tuesdays and two morning sessions from 7:30am to 9am on Wednesday and Thursday.  It seems to help since we've had good numbers at those sessions so far.

What would all this practice mean if there weren't tournaments to go to? Well, we would probably be in shape and be really good at throwing a frisbee for no reason. (I think that's the mission statement on USAUltimate's website)  So we have a splendid assemblage of tournaments for the 2015 spring season.  The tournament schedule is as follows:

2.14.15
Dayton Sectionals of the Indoor Ultimate Championship
Dayton, Ohio
4 teams

2.21.15 - 2.22.15
Beard of Zeus Tune Up
Berea, Kentucky
10 teams

3.14.15 - 3.15.15
Boogie Nights
Oxford, Ohio
16 teams

3.28.15 - 3.29.15
Music City 2015
Nashville, Tennessee
16 teams

Date TBA
Ohio Conference Sectionals
Location TBA
16 teams

Date TBA
Ohio Valley Regionals
Location TBA
16 teams

5.22.15 - 5.25.15
Nationals
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
20 teams

We are very optimistic at our chances to win all 3 regular season tournaments that we plan to attend.  We plan on winning the Dayton Sectional indoor tournament as well, but we are still unsure whether or not that will come to fruition.  The indoor tournament won't be the traditional tournament format, but will be a great way for us to shake off the rust and play competitive games against other teams in the area.

I'll also mention how the fall season ended.  We attended a tournament hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in early November.  We were once again, and for the last time this year, split into X and Y squads.  Both squads faired well by making it to the championship bracket on Day 2.  We ended up forming a mega team to play the host IWU A-squad, which by the way consisted of the D-III Defensive Player of the Year, in a 3rd place game and came out victorious.  It was a nice way to cap the season off.  Here are some pics from that tournament

Additionally we had to say goodbye to a few beloved members of Ghetto Force at the end of the fall semester.  Mark Federenko, Ted Lannert, Michael "RapSheet" Mills, and nearly Dylan "Jump Manual" Corwin.  These people made all of us youngsters into the men we are today.  Maybe not that dramatic, but they're still awesome people that we've grown to know and love. We will miss them as they join the "Real World" and play for other Club teams.  We wish them the best.  <3

That's pretty much it for now.  I (actually will do this) keep you posted as new stuff happens.  In the mean time enjoy this before and after picture of Peaches from the time he was a member of Ghetto Force to the time after graduation.
